BAIN AND CROPS. Welcome rains have fallen throughout this district fur many weeks now at intervals, and crops in general arc up to perfection. There is an abundir.ee of graes to be seen on all the farms around and stock arc linking well. Large sup plies of milk are coming in daily t) the'ereamery, which speaks well for the country. SURPRISE PARTY.

A surprise party was tendered to Mr ar.d Mrs Grintcr in their new bung Blow a fortnight ago. The evening was fine, which ecabled their friends to be present. Dancing was the order of the evening. Songs were rendered by Mrs Robinson, Roper Bros, and several others. A speech was made by Mr Dell, who spoke of the good qualities of Mr and Mrs Grintor and wished them, on behalf of the settlers, a very prosperous time on tneir new farm. Reference was also ma'Je to Mr and Mrs Robinson, who are new-comers to this district. The speakers gave them a hearty welcome to Waiau. Supper was harded round and tinging of Auld Lang Syne brought a very pleasant gathering to a close. NEW SETTLERS. Mr Robert Moure, of Waiau, has just disposed of his farm, consisting of 95 acres. The name of the buyer is not yet ascertained. The farm was sold through the agency of Mr Dell. Mr George Learning bas aho disposed of his 40 acre section lo a resident cf Arcti Hill.

SICKNESS

Measles and whooping rough aru prevailing in this district, but only in a very mild form. The attendance in the echool has decreased owing to sickness.

THE TELEPHONE.

The 'telephone has been iixed up again in the post office here, acd we find-ourselves in close comrauni cation with Auckland.
