THE EXPRESS TRAINS.
A Change at Pukekohe. According to an announcement recently made, after November Ist the Kotorua express, which arrives here at will no longer stop at Pukekohe. In its place the new Thames express will take the running now made by the Rotorua train, but that train leaves Auckland at 9.15 a.m. and in a number of ways will not prove nearly so serviceable for this important district as the present service. The Mayor ot Pukekohe (Mr Lawrie) has put himself into communication with the Prime Minister, and the following telegrams were exchanged:— The Mayor lo Hon. W. F. Massey:--"I notice with alarm the proposed time-table Kotorua express. Please see that Pukekohe interests are safeguarded." Mr Massey's reply: "Will see Minister of Railways on the subject." The following day the Mayor wrote to Mr Maßsey as follows:—"In reference to my telegram of yesterday re Rotorua express, you will understand that it will ue a serious losb to Pukekohe if the express does not stop here. It will mean thqt any passengers from our town en route to Rotorua will have to go to Mercer by a slow train and wait there for some time before joining the express. And, sir, the progress our town is making in every way surely warrants you giving ui some consideration. It has been used as an argument against stopping the trains at Pukekohe that water could not be obtained. I would respectfully point oat that the Pukekohe borough now has a splendid water supply, and I feel sure arrangements could be made whereby your trains could be supplied here at a reasonable cost. Trusting you will give this matter your favourable consideration as it is a serious matter for our town." To this letter no reply has yet been received.
