LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The appeal in tha Pukekohe Presbyterian charge on hehslf of Dr Kirk's mission resulted in the sum of £3l hei;:g contributed. Complaints have reached us occasionally tint "the 'Times' must have been stolen." Here is a para-gr-ph ol interest to those who do not regard the "lifting" ol a paper as a serious matter:—A young man was detect.'d by a constahle in the act of iibstracting a subscriber's newspaper from under a doorway in Wanganui. He was promptly artested and brought before the Cnurt. The Magistrals, while letiing the offender off with a fine of five shillings, md; it quit; cleat to him that in the tycs ot the law the stealing oi a penty paper was an pffence the s.e:i.!usnsss of which was not to be judged by the intrinsic \a!ue of the article &tclen. Ha intimated (hat tne next perton brought before him for a similar offence would be dtalt with much mac severely.
