MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT. A meeting of the atove Society was held in tha Maungatawhiii Valley school last Wednesday evening. There was a large number of members prrs:n'. Tie subject for the evening wss: "Is National Prohibition preferable to Sta e control?" Mr J. Mcfavish tcok the side of Prohibition, and Mr R. McKenzie to k the tide if Stats control. The Messrs J. Ueai, C. Lippiatf, Steel and R. Per.dergrast also spoke. On a vote being taken "State control" won «he evening. Aft r tfie debate the Maungatawhi i members entertained the Fokeno members to a dar.ee. FARMERS' UNION SOCIAL. The fjrtnighiiy soeitl was lield last evening, there being a very large cumber present. Euchre was played the first part of the evening. 'lhe piizes were won by Miss Emily Walden ar.d Miss G. Douglas. The men's prize was wen ly Mr P. Walden, while Mr J. Robertson captured the tr.oby. Mrs J. Graham provided the music, assisted by Master A. Graham. The duties Jcf M.C. were cariied cue by Mr G. Hayward. The secretary, Mr S. McGaw, carried out his duties in a very successful manner.
