HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
Its Success Assured.
Ever since the lust meeting to promote a Horticultural Society for the Fukekohe district the enthusiasm has accumulated, and at each successive meeting the reports from members have been most encouraging.
One of the features is the heartiness with which neighbouring Districts are co-operating. Tuakau is always progressive, and when Mr H. Driver paid the people there a visit, on Horticultural Society business, be was treated most handsomely. Prizes in cash and bind were donated as follows:—W. Cols £3, A. Madill £1 12?, Pirrett Bros. £1 ss, Free Stores, Green and Coleb:ook and P. A. Rowe £1 Is each, W. J. Cole £l, M. Foley and W. Strahan 10s 6d each, P. G. Woolley, J. Cruickshank, J. W. Collins, W. Booker and Mrs Moor 10s each, H. T. Acton ss. The Committee were naturally delighted with Tuakau's splendid response. In Buckland Mr Home headed the local list with a guinea ar.d altogether Mr Driver's efforts produced something over £lB. At the last meeting of the Executive Committse the secretary reported that over £SO bad been promised by way of special prize money.
The Society's intention is to hold two shows "one in December and the other in April. The Summer Show, besides seasonable flowers, fruit and vegetables, will have important sections for fancy work, plain sewing, phoiography, educational classes and so on. At the Autumn Show, in addition to seasonable flowers, fruit and vegetables, there will be cookery, bottled fruits, conserves, pickks, jams, jellies, etc. Judging from the readiness with which the movement is being promoted these shows will become a permanent feature. The Society certainly has a useful future before it, and its wcrk should do much towards promoting a keener interest in garden culture.
