a meeting of the Pukekohe District High School Committee on Wednesday nignt it was decided that the Committ:e apply to the Auckland Education Board to enforce the clauses in the Education Act, making attendance at continuation classes compulsory. AH that requires to be dane row is for the Education Board to sanction the application. Under thi3 it will become compulsory for all young persons over lourteen years but not over seventeen years to attend continuation classes for not le3s than four hours a week, provided that a young person who is undergoing military training in accordance with the regulations for tne time being in force under the Defence Act, 1908, shall not be required to devote more than six hours altogether in each week to military training, and to attendant at classes under these regulations. The preceding regulations shall not apply to young persons who:—(a) Left the primary school prior to the year preceding that in which these regulations become operative; (b) have attsnded for not less than iwo years a secondary school, a day technical school, the secondary department of a District High School, er a private school approved by the Board; (c) are receiving instruction at a public school, a secondary school, a day technical school, or a private school or class approved by the Board, if the hours and period of instruction in such private school or class are not lass than the hours and period cf instruction prescribed in Regulation 1 hereof; (d) have passed the examination for senior free places or the Civil Service examination (junior or senior), or the matriculation examination, or other public examination approved by the Board; (e) hold a certificate of exemption under regulation 3 hereof.
"The Director of Technical Education may issue a certificate exempting any young person ftom attendance ia whole or in part if he is satisfied that the said person:— (a) Is unabe to attend by reason of physical or mental infirmity; or (b) is medically unfit to attend; or (c) ia unable to attend by reason of circumßtacceß directly affecting the livelihood of the family of which he is a member.
"The course of instruction provided shall, as far as possible, be adapted to the individual needs of tha pupil?, and shalll be determined by tha Director of Technical Education. Such course shall, as far as possible, be determined in accordance with the wishes of the parents or guardians of the pupils, and in the case* of subjects of instruction relating to specific trades or industries, the Director may also consult employers or other persons engaged in or connected with those trades or industries.
"It shall be the duty of every parent, guardian and employer within the school district having under his control or in his employment, young persons to whom these regulations apply, to forward the names and addresses of all such young persons to the Director of Technical Education. Every employer shall also, within seven days of tha date of employment, forward to the director the name of every young person to whom these regulations apply who enters his employment subsequent to the first Monday in February and before the last Friday in November in each year."
