WORK IN BOROUGH.

Recommendations of Com*

mittee.

Considered by the Council.

The Works Committee's report caused considerable discussion at the Borough Counril meeting on Wednesday night. The following matters were dealt with: PERMANENT LEVEL .

"Should the Council consider it necessary to have permanent levels taker, the Committee recommend that the following streets be dealt with: King street and West road, to Jackson's corner; Harris street; all streets between the above; Manukau road from hotel to foot <f hill; Convent road, frum Se.ldon Lamp to old Town Board boundary; Elinburcujh street, to W. Blake's: Tcbin street; Blake's road; Hall street; Overhead bridge to Prospect Terrace; East street to railway station; three chains along Nursing Home road; East street to Boyd's. The Mayor movei that this portion of the report be adopted. Cr Abbott seconded the resolution. Cr Patterson thought thev were going too fast. They had some streets done, and they ought to get the others done one at a time. He did not think there was any necessity t'j get the lot done. The Mayor: The Act provides that we must get them done within two years. Cr Comrie supported the resolution. It was only fair that ratepavers should know their levels when they build. It was not pleasant after a man spent £IOUO on a building to find the road lowered or raised a couple of feet. Cr Hamilton said if they were going on with the drainage scheme the one survey would do. The resolution was carried. HEWLETT'S ROAD.

The Committee have instructed the Foreman to attend to this work as soon cs possible.—Adopted.

SCORIA NEAR AUCTION MART.

The Council decided, Eome time ago, not to put in private crossings, and we cannot recommend that this work be done.

Cr Patterson: That was passed. It was left to the Works Committee to do. Cr Pollock: It was left to the Works Committee to report on. Ths Clerk: It's not on the minutes. The Mayor: Tnat settles it. Cr Patterson: Nonsense. I moved the resolution myself. Cr Comrie: Was it seconded? Cr Patterson: Well, I'll move now that scoria be put down. Cr Pollock said the Council had decided not to put down crossirgs for private people. The Mayor: I don't know that it can be regarded as a crossing. Cr Polluck: Well, if it's.aroadit will require metal from the Three Lamps to Harrington Avenue, and that would nnan taking money off other roads where it was wanted more,

Cr Hurley pointed out that the road was very bad, and that it. was only fair that it should be kept in order. At present it was axle deep and waa no encouragement to anybody to start business. Cr Comrie said that the metal road was good. There were other places where metal was wanted a great deal more.

Cr Hamilton ita'ed that other business people had spoken to him about scoria on their roads. Unless thev were prepared to do them'all, they were creating a dangerous precedent. Cr Bilkey opposed the resolution. Cr Beatty considered there were, plenty of places where scoria was required more. Lr Patterson, in reply, asked if the Committee were aware that metal had bsen placed in front of RouUton'a store and other places. Why did they object to it going in front of anoiher business man's place'/ Cr Pollock, in reply, pointed cut that in the cases referred to the load was metalled from side to side; they were only patching the holes, In the other case Cr Patterson wanted the Council to make the road. The amendment was put and lost by 7 votes to 2. This portion of the report was then adepted. 'JHECK VALVE AT HALLIDAY'S COKNEK. "We wish to draw the Council's attention to this check valve, and the insufficient covering over the same, and recommend that a permanent covering be provided."— Referred to the Engineer to attend to. FOOTPATHS. "We wish to recommend that the footpath on the eastern sile of Station road, from East street to opposite the stationmaster's gate, be formed, and chips placed thereon." Cr Patterson asked whera the mouey was coming from. The Mayor: From the loan. It was one of the unspent allocations of the old Town Board. Cr Patterson: It was never included in the loan. It was r.ot on tha ballot paper.

The Mayor: It was your fault it was left cut. You forgot to put it there.

Cr Patterson: I object to that statement. It's personal. It's not correct.

The Mayor: It's a fact. He then explained that when the loan was being contemplated an advisory committee was set up to prepare a list of roads on which work should be done. It was decided to have £SO put on the liit for expenditure on this road. Cr Patterson: But the Town Board never authorised this amount to be put on the loaa proposals. Cr Comrie said he had been a member of the Committee and bore out the Mayor's statements. Tha Town Board had placed this amount with other 9 on the proposal. Cr Cr Comrie: But I say it was. Cr Hamilton pointed out that it was only a email expenditure Probably £lO would cover tha coat. This section was then adopted. HALL SIREEi'.

"We also recommend that scoria be placed on Hall street from King street to back oi' Post Office section and that the footpaths on both sides be put in order: (a) On east side as far as Weston's bakehouss; (b) on west side to the back of Post Office section." Cr Patterson took exception to this. Thor2 was a good scoria road three parts of the way and people could get in. Just before the

Works Committee objected to putting in crossings for private persons and row tliey were going to do work for ether private persons. The Mayor: Nothing cf the kind. Cr Pollork pointed tut that some parts of this road near King street had never been metalled, and when rain came on it wai impassable. Report adopted. BEKRIM AN'S ROAD. Cr Pollock reported that the Committee had gore over the road Mr berriman was making for Mr Uaysh. A good deal cf work had btei carried cut and the bulk of the e>irth work had been done, hut finishing touches were needed, The Committee recommended that Mr Eerriman be given three months to finish and put in order the work. PUNI ROAD. Cr Pollock said he would like the opinion of the Foreman as to the condition of Puni road. The Foreman considered it was in a most dangerous state in spots, and would rfquite 40 yards of metal to repair it. It required urgent attention. Cr Comrie mentioned there were some hcles on East street over the Hill which required attention. It was decided to attsnd to Puni road and East street.
