THE SHOW GROUNDS.

No Further Purchase Made

It will be remembered that ?t a recent meeiirg of the General Committee of ths Franklin A. and P. ' Society it was c'ecided that a new j Showgiound ba not purchased. A MEMBEK'S PROTEST. O.i Siturdav the committee re- j ceived the following 1 tter from Mr] C. ShipherJ, Pu■.i: —"l notice from | a report of the last meeth£ of i ha General Commi'tea that it hss d - ! cided not to carry out the "recom- i mendalion'' of the niee'irg of mem- I bers at the last anmal meeting, at which a Lub-:omn3ittee waa set up to obtain ths prize j end terrna of the various grounds it most i suitable for Showground purposea; and than call a meeting of the mexbeis of ynur Sccuty and lay the result of the enquiries and offers of i suitable sites before that meeting. I In my opinian that \-eeommendatian' was mandatory ard yo'jr commit e ! is failing in its duty to the mem- | bers of ths Society in not carrying it out. However, the annual meeting will toon be here and so far vry little dene and nothing to repcrt; but 1 am sure ihat a large number of the members will hive a good deal to say rela:ive to setting their wishes at defiance. 1 trust your Committee will not ignore the 'commands' of the members cf ytur Society, but will carry out to the fullest the instructions received at the last ainual meeting, 1 regret ttst I allowed mys If to ba appointed on the sub-commit See ta vuw the vatious grounds, as 1 have no voice in your General Committee. It appears ihat eome of your committee consider that you can do anything ar.d not bj responsible ti the Society." The letter was received without comment. EXTEND THE GROUNDS. After the committ.e had decided not to buy new ground a subcommittee (Messrs Lawrie and Phillipps) was appointed to enquire as to prices of available lands adjacent to the Showground. On Satirday this committee reported, sayirg:— "Having accepted tie responsibility of ascertaining from adjoining owners of property to Showgrounds, as to whether anv land is available for show purpo?es: We beg to report to jour Executive that altei making full enquiries we have only one property to submit t) your consideration. Mr B. Andrew, oscer of a section said to contain If acres of land, with residence 5 rooms, bath-room and scullery, aeks (a certain sam q icted). most of which he requirea in cash ar.d will only allow this offer to remain open until May 26th, 1913. The lar.d is nearly all level, adj ins the present Showground, sni with a slight alte ation to t h .e present fencing arrangement! we consider the ar;a will supply, moit admirably, the required room for accommodating the vehicles we have to deal with on the days on which our annual exhibition is held. (Reference wss here made to tha value, etc., «jf the house.) Having carefully inspected this property we beg to respectfully recommend to yaur Executive to immediately acqiire it, as we un- ' hesitatingly say it will supply a much-felt want ta the Society. ■ With regard to the sections owflid by Mr F. W. Whyte, we wrote him and his reply, which speaks for itself, we enclose."

The reply ftom Mr white read: "Re your letter of May 2nd regarding sections owned by ma and abutting on Showground. Some t?co years ago I put a price cn thore sections but tha Show committee did rot feel inclined to giva that figure, nor anwyhsre near it. 1 think the sections will be worth more to me than what your Committee would bJ prepared to give. I have rather an idea of bulHing three villas cn the sections a3 soon as the preheat leaie expires." The Committee decided to \i<>w Mr Andrew's secti;n, and upon resuming Mr Phillipps mcv£d, and Mr Lawria seconded:— "That (his Ex:cutive Committ-e recommend purchase of Mr B. Andrew's property, no# under offer to the Socisly and er.d avour to obtain an opti ;ii over same till August 12th, 1913." Upon being put the imtbn-was lost. For 3, against 10, GENERAL. Some question arose aa to paying the local police a donation for their special on the Showground during tha Show days.—lt was left to Mr Lawrie to arrange th2 matt-:r. Mr Roul ton muved, a d Mr Ballard seconded, That up to 30s be paid to M* Fulto.i as expenses towards the Tuakau bay at the last Show, also a similar sum to Mr Ashford for the Mauku bay.
