POKENO

DEATHS. It is with regret that I have to record the death of another of our early settlers, in the person of Mrs Annie Chapman, who passed away at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr T. J. Hicks. The late Mrs Chapman was 70 years of a K e, and was the relict of the late Mr David Chapman, who died a few months ago. The mortal remains were placed in their last resting place on Saturday, the service at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. Kearney, assistfd by th=> Rev. S. Nixon, of fuktkolie. Mrs Taylor, molher of Mr J. Taylor, of Pokeno, passed away on Friday at Matangi, and the funeral took place on Sunday. ILLNESS. Mrs blair, of Pckeno Valley, is, I am sorry to hear, seri.usly ill. STOCK SALE. The usual monthlv stock sale was held here last we.k, when a fair amount ot stock came forward. Bidding was not tuo trisk, and prices showed a slight decline on previous sales. PICNIC. A meeting of the management committee of the local picnic and sports was held last Friday evening. The secretary read a statement of receipts and expenditure, and after all accounts are paid, and promised donations received, there will bs a small credit balance to carry forward to next year's outing. I'tRRITORIALS. Last Saturday the local Territorials and senior cadets had their first day's shooting. Staff - SergeantMajor Hatt was in charge, and he gave the hoys some useful instruction in rifle shooting. The day was very rough and windy, and taking into consideration that it was the first shot, the scoring was fairly good. IS THE ROAD BOARD ASLEEP? I think that our Road Board must be asleep or dead. If it is only asleep it is about time that it woke up, as the decking on the bridges between the station and the Valley require seeing to at once, or a *erioui accident will ensue. A lot of the decking is rotten and should be renewed.
