PUBLISHER'S CHAT.
The proper functions of a di-trict paper am n<>t always' appreciated. We are in business to lvcord ioe.il and district history. World - wide affairs—Mich, 1' iv insttince, as the Antarctic calamity—are outside tin-pre-ont scope of our activities. Since the " Times " started it lias to its record the fact that every article and item of news it lias pub],-hod has especially related to its own district. That is a claim which cannot he made by any other country paper in New Zonk ml. Ratepayers have had the opportunity they never before enjoyed of reading faithful and lull reports of the pr. iceeditigs of the various local bodies That our news policy has been ap; reciated has been demonstrated by our ever-increasing circulation. Although the " Times " is not yet a year old we believe it has a bigger circulation than any other couuti y paper in the 1) miiiiion, a lew provincial d iilies alone excepted. That is why it is such an excellent advertising medium. Its size iias be.-m considerably enlarged and the proprietors are iiow considering a still further expan-ion. Our advertising contracts for the coming year are now being written up. Many newspapers take outside advertisements at a cheaper rate than those quoted :o local advertisers, but the policy of the '■ Times " is to give to local advertisers the advantage. It plea-ps the " Times " better to publish a local advertisement than it would to advertise wares which would divert trade to Auckland. That is why we have never irvited any Auckland house to advertise in our columns in competition with our own tradespeople ; also, that is why we can so confidently approach the people of the district for their advertising business. A Pollock subscriber writes: "J think my quarter must be about uo ar.cl I arn sending yju 3s for another quarter, as 1 like the paper." IhanKS. We strive to make the " limes" nor, merely a local but a district paper.
