MERCER.
ROWING CLUB. Crews from Mercer Rowing Club went to Russell and Whangarei regattas. The Open Weight Juniors did splendid work. At Whangarei they won by about six lengths, and at Ru«s 1! by two lengths. The crew consisted of C. Roose (stroke), W. Hewitt (3), F. Wright (2), R. Hunter (bow), E Beamish (cox). Mr H. Bilderbeck. the Club's worthy captain, journeyel north with the crew and saw all their wants attended to. At Whangarei a banquet was arrauged for the visiting crews and the whole affair was a great success. DROWNING FATALITY. Mr Fred Clephane, 18 years of age, a son of Mr Clephane, of Churchill, was drowned in the Waikato River yesterday through the overturning of a canoe. Great sympathy is felt for Mr Clephane who is gieatly respected in the district.
Mr A. 0. Tribe, clerk at the sawmill, Mercer, has been recommended to the Church of England Bishop as lay reader- for the district The Union Collieries coal mines are starting the new year with about 100 hand?. At the Waikato Heads picnic there was a good crowd of people and launches from all parts attended this year. It is an ideal spot to spend a holiday and it is a great wonder that more people do not gather there in the holiday times. There is no 'phone, telegraph or anything to worry the business man who has just put in twelve months hard work.
