« Tennis Club. With wonth-r tliveMtening and a gate blowing the Tennis Club made its sej -nd attempt to f. rmailv open the courts for the i-«-as<>n. The surroundings wer- given a gay appearance by a brave dijplay of flags procured for the occasion by the Club's energetic secretary, Mr J. H. Beale. Arrangements for the reception of visitors were as complete as weather would permit. Club colours —blue and white—were prominent in the table decoration and corner In the unavoidable absence of Mr Foley, Mr H. B. Free formally welcomed visitors and friends on behalf of the Club. Mrs H. H. Cheeeeman played the first ball and declared the courts duly opened. Bhort game sets, the .best in five, wjjre arranged, with the following results:—Miss M. Taylor and W. H. Northmore v. Mrs H. B. Free and W Graham, I—3; Miss G Hills and J. Pirritt v. Miss Mayall and J. Madill, 3—o; Young and Tapper v. Byah and Stevenson, 3—l; Miss Hamilton and J. H. Beale v. Miss Mayall and A. Hamilton, 3—2. At this stage the weather, which has ao persistently dogged pll Tennis Club functions, once more took a hand and rain drove players from the court, making it necessary for many members to return home without striking a ball. Altogether some 55 members and friends attended, and the display of white dresses and flannels should really "have melted the heart of the weather clerk. Much credit is due to Messrs Tapper, Beale and Hamilton for work done in connection with the court and to the ladies who had charge of the refreshments. A series of handicap tournaments is to be iplayed and much interest and speculation is in evidence as to results. . METHODIST CHURCH ANNIVERSARY. Anniversary services in connection with the above church were held on Sunday, the Revs. J. D. Jory and E. F. Blamires officiating. Large congregations gathered, and special music was rendered by the choir. Unfavourable weather conditions prevented many local residents from attending the above, but the Tuakau district did not lack representation. Messrs H. Craig, W. Young, S. Ferguson, C. 8. and H. B. Free and E. and J. Frost being present TENDERS. Tenders have been called for the formation of the new Whangarata road, and part of the Tuakau road new the railway station, and it is hoped that the work will be speedily carried out. The latter road is now dignified with the name of Liverpoolstreet, but I am sure that our Gov-ernor-elect would consider it n. libel were he able to view the road in its present state.
