MERCER.

Rowing Club. The opening of the Mercer Eow- j ing Club's season took place on I Saturday afternoon, when the club ! gave an At Homo. All the enthusi- j asts from around the district were in j attendance, and Mercer appeared un- j usually gay. The ladies dispensed afternoon tea, which was much ap- ; predated by the visitors. Eepre- j sentatives from the Ngaruawahia and Taupiri clubs attended, and Mixed Trial fours wore rowed off. j Four events were put down on the programme, and a very interesting afternoon's sport was witnessed. Five crows competed and were run off as follows : First heat: Won by E. Kelly (I), W. Joll (2), F. Parker (3), C. Boose (stroke), and A. Beamish (cox). Second heat: J. Barrow (1\ F Wright (2), W. Harold (3),' W. Oliver (stroke), and E. Beamish (<"«)• _ Semi-final and final were won bv E. Kelly (1), W. Joll (2), F.Parkor (;!), C. Eooso (stroke), and A. Beamish (cox). After the racing the visiting crows vvoro entertained at a dinner : at the Railway Hotel. The tables were well loaded, and Host Pickett fairly outdid himself in the way all arrangements were carried out. After dinner several toasts were drunk and speeches made by the president and visiting representatives. Mr Pickett, Mr Joll, Mr Gasson, Mr Petersen, Mr Tregoweth, and Mr Nc'l were among the speakers on the various topics brought up for discussion. Discussion seemed to centre round j the new rule which the Rowing Association of New Zealand are ' bringing—i.e., professionals in other j branches of sport to be nut allowed to compete in amateur events. The ! general consensus of opinion seemed j to bo against this new rule. Further { reference t.) this subject will be 1 made at subsequent meetings to be I arranged. As time was short and ! the Wa'kalo members had to go by train, proceedings were brought to a i quick close. ;
