THE TOWN HALL SITE.
Conditions of Dedication. Was the Contract Broken ? Can Firebel! be Erected ? At Wednesday's meeting of the I'ukekohe Borough Council a copy of the agreement between Mr T. Kennelly and !he old Town Board was preduced for the fint timr. This agreement war in connection with the setting aside of a Town Hall site (next to the Oddfellows' Hall) in leturn for which the Board agreed to make the highway with a metal road of stacdard width, ard proper footpaths on both aides of the street, fhe Board also agreed rot to use the site or permit it to be used for any other purpose than a site for e Town Hall, offices or .business chamber fcr carrying on the Hoard's business. The work of road and fcotpath formation, etc, should have been completed by October. The Mayor said it would take £SO to dn tt is work, and it seemed by the contract that they were bound to carry it out. WHAT ABOUT THE BELL? Cr Comne said they had decided to put the fire-bell on this site, but it appeared that this document prevented them from building a fire britade statun there. The Mayor said that of course they need rot build tte Council office or Town Hall for 50 years so far as the agreement was concerned. Cr Ker.relly: But the agreement says the site shall not he used for an> other purpose. A tower for a bell is not a municipal chamber. . Cr Hamiftoti: But there is nothing to stop us from building a Town Hall there and putting a bell on tcp of it. Cr Johns said local bodie3 should r.ut all .w themselves to je bourd in this way. Either ihe advnntages given on both sides were equal or they were not. If they were hot equal the cifference should te paid, but thtv should not be Lound like this. The Mayor: Quite right. It r would have been better to buy some other section outright. Cr Comriti: It's some more of the Town Board's work. Cr Hamilton said he thought the Hoard had broken the agieemetit HI through by building tre shed then. The Ma,or said he understood that Mr Kem.illv was rot pushing for the work to be done right up to time. A FOOLISH AGREEMENT. Cr Cornrie said it was a very foolish agreement that had been handed down to them. He did not think they shculd go on with this road work at all until a fresh agreement was made between thL' Council and Mr Kennellv No doubt the Town Board had i> rotten the agreement hy putting the buildings there, and the Council would tie break Irg it rutting tte lire bell there. He moved. That the matter be referred to the Works Co rim itf' r consideration. ( r Kennelly said he did not think the agreement with his father had I.ten broken so far, ex c t pt that the load work had m t been core Cr i'oliock: the place has been used as 3 dumping ground; and we car. put up the tirj Kli. Cr K'-iint'lly : If you jo you will find vi'U will fall in. - ft mne's motior laps <l, aid ! •' that the Mayor anfi v» " thp borough » : her the , . i" • u • hell nn t <i4_ i te. el' • ' erection U to be suspend^!.
