A PUKEKOHE CASE.

In the Auckland Police Court Michael Hogan was charged with failing to provide his wife with adequate maintenance. Evidence was given that the accused had left his wife destitute in a boardinghouse at Pukekohe when she was approaching confinement, and she had had to be maintained by other people. It was further stated that accused had never at any time accepted his responsibilities relating to the marriage. An order was made directing him to pay 20s a week, and to find a surety of £25 that he would pay. In addition he was convicted on the charge, and sentenced to two months' hard labour, the warrant to be suspended while he keeps up his payment of 20s a week.
