The music of the Italian Band was a feature of the evening, being perfect. Groat credit is duo to the secretary (Mr W. Haeata), for tho thorough manner in which everything was arranged. The committee are greatly indebted to Mrs Rishton, Miss Patullo and Miss Howard for their assistance in arranging the supper and Mr H. Annual Creamery Social. -The annual creamery social was held on Thursday, 29tli ult., and on . this occasion was tendered as a farewell to the late manager of the Putuwahoe creamery, Mr G. E. Dixon. As arrangements were in the hands of Mr W. Howard, a veteran at this class of work, everything passed off splendidly, and a very entertaining evening was spent. During the evening items were given by Miss Patullo, Mr Mosylem and Mr Gilmore, a step dance by the latter gentleman being greatly appreciated. Mr J. Henry, in making a presentation of a large illuminated address to Mr Dixon, spoke in highly complimentary terms of the respect Mr Dixon was held in the distuct. The testimonial, which was a masterpiece, was executed by Mr F. Simson. and showed sketches of the creamery, the Mauku Falls, and other well-known spots, aud bore a highly appreciative address signed, on behalf 1 of the suppliers and residents, by W ' Howard J. MERCER. Rugby Union Ball. The rain on Friday may have been welcomed by the farmers, but it was uu fortunate for the Rugby Union that it did not come twenty-four hours later, as the wet weather kept many from coming a distance. The Club shed was tastefully decorated with ferns and green vegetation, whilst festoons of the union colors, maroon and white, stood out in striking contrast to the mural em-U-lli&hmeuts. Over 50 couples were in attendance and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The music was supplied by Marrige's orchestra from Auckland, extras being played by Mrs Valentine and Miss Clark. To the secretaries, Messrs F. Sturm and E. Sweeney, too much praise cannot be given for the excellent manner in which every detail was carried out, and to the committee of ladies and gentlemen who assisted the thanks of all are due. Mr H. Bilderbeck proved liimself an indefatigable M.C. and it was not his fault if anybody did not have a partner. During the evening Mr W. C. Pickett, vice-President of the Union in the absence of the President, presented the caps won by the United Club to the captain, Mr J. Dean. In making the presentation Mr Pickett referred to the excellent re»x>rd of the club and congratulated the players on their success in winning the championship. He presentod to Mr E Sweeney a medal donated by Mr G. E. Morgon for the player scoring the most points. Mr Sweeney, the speaker said, had been a tower of strength to his side. He regretted that on account of the Hancock Cup not having arrived he was unable to hand it over to the captain of the team. Mr J. Dean, captain of the United . Club, thanked Mr Pickett for his kindly remarks. Mr E. Sweeney, who was gree.ed with three cheers, briefly thanked Mr Morgon for the handsome medal and Mr Pickett for his good wishes. Mr Morgon, the donor of the medal, eulogised the service rendered by Mr E. Sweeney to his team. Mr and Mrs Sweeney had every reason to be proud of their boys, three of whom played for the United Club and had gained places in the representative team. Some nice frocks wore worn:—Mrs Langhorn, blue voile; Miss L. Pickett, heliotrope; Miss Sweeney, cream satin, lace all ovsr; Mrs lahi Ewikau, heliotrope silk with satin trimmings ; Mrs Lamming, pink silk and black trimming ; Miss K. We have very good prospects of workmen's homes being erected hero very shortly. The Premier promised Mr Bollard, M .P., that if six applications reached him he would secure land ou which to buiid. The required number of applications have been forwarded to Wellington and doubtless steps will be taken to secure the land at once.

The balance sheet of the Citizens' Ball prepared by Mr W. J. Deeble shows a credit balance of £4 16s 6d, which amount has been handed over to the secretary of the Progressive League as a donation to the Ashtitld Litter Fund. A meeting of the management committee of the Raglan Rugby Union was held on Wednesday last. The balance sheet showed receipts totalling £2l 10s, and payments made reaching £l3 5s 7d, so the balance in hand ~n the first year's working is highly creditable. It was decided to pay expenses of all players who took part 111 any representative uiat< h. Mr Tapper tendered his resignation as secretaryowing to pressure of oth«r work, but he was jtersuaded to act until the commencement of next season

POKENO. It is with deep regret that I have to chronicle the death of one of our oldest settlers at the advanced age of 87 years. I refer to Mr John McDonald who passed away last Thursday in the Auckland hospital. About a fortnight ago the old gentleman was seized with a stroke and was removed to the Auckland hospital under the direction of his medical adviser, but despite good nursing and attention he passed away. His aged partner predeceased Mr McDonald about two years ago, and he leaves no family nor rolatives. The funeral took placo on Friday last, leaving the railway station at 2 p.m. for the Presbyterian cemetery, where the Rev. Angus Mac Donald read the burial service. The chief mourners were Messrs J. S. Ryrie (trustee), James Walker and Jauies Brownlee. Mr Rab. McKenzie has been fleeted to the vacancy in the New Zoaland Dairy Association's council caused by the resignation of Mr G. P. Ewing, and should be the right man in the right place. Mr J. Rowland, of the local railway staff, has been transferred to Auckland and Mr W. A. Gubbins is taking his place, pending a permanent appointment. I understand the Progressive League is working hard to have a messenger appointed to the office section. This is a good move, and a warranted one. The flaxmill managed by Mr S. W. Smith for Messrs Patterson and Robertson, of Auckland, has changed proprietors. Mr J. Dean, ji., (a former lessee) having bought into the business which at present is on the up grade. Messrs Buckland and Sons are making excellent progress in the additions to the sale yards. The present alterations will allow of another 12 p. ns being utilised for yarding stock and should be keenly appreciated by buyers. The local railway yard has just been re-metalled and is a decided improvement.

BUCKLAND. Bachelors' Ball. The Buckland bacholors gave a return ball on Friday evening, August 30th, which proved very successful. The committee spared nothing in their ellorts to make the evening enjoyable. The hall was tastefully decorated-and the floor was in splendid order. Mr Tyrrell supplied excellent music. Owing to the unsettled state of the weather many outside friends were prevented from being present, nevertheless the hall was full. Messrs Jelleris and Potter officiated as M's.C., and carried out their duties successfully. Amongst the ladies were: Mrs Davidson, black silk ; Mrs Jamieson, brown silk ; Mrs McKean, electric blue; Mrs Graham, navy blue; Mrs Russell, cream, Mrs Tilby, pale green voile, Mrs J. Wylie, black; Mrs Sloane, cream cashmere; Mrs J. Walker, dainty cream frock; Miss Bagnall. blue silk muslin, bugle trimming ; Miss Barker, cream serge ; Miss Davidson, blue with cream trimmings; Miss Home, cream serge; Miss H. Home, white ; Miss Hewitt, white; Miss Johnston, cream voile with silk insertion trimming; Miss L. Johnston, dainty white muslin dress and blue girdle; Miss Jefferis, pale blue silk poplin, cream braid and fringe; Miss McCroy, pale green silk ninon with green oriental trimming ; Miss Fryday, pretty cream voile, satin trimmings ; Miss McKae, pale blue silk muslin, black girdle ; Miss C. Mcßae, heliotrope silk muslin with cream girdle. During an interval a refreshing supper was served by the bachelors. Dancing was resumed until the early hours of morning, which brought a pleasaut and sociable evoning to a close. Tho good work of the committee (Messrs W. Jelleris, C. Latimer, J. K. Hamilton and A. G. Potter) deserves special mention.

WAIUKU. A meeting of ratepayers of Waiuku Road District was held Friday evening to consider the proposed borrowing of money to improve and metal the road running up between the public hall aud the Church of England past Mr Rossiter's property ; also the metalling of the road recently opened on Mr Mellsop's estate. It was agreed to go in for the loan for these two works, but the proposal to include the half of one side of the main street in the township, and have channelling and kerbing, was negatived, it being thought advisable to wait and have the whole street properly formed later. The s.B. Weka grounded al»out midday Friday as she was leaving for Onehunga. Owing to the strong eas terly wind blowing she was unable to keep the channel and so got crosswise and fixed, off Baker's point, below the town wharf. She was floated off and on Saturday steamed to Onehunga, where repairs will be effected. An effort should b<- made to have the creek drodged, as it is becoming more and more silted up.
