TOWN BOARD FOR TUAKAU

" We nolhiwj f.rknwiti', nor set doivn aught in malice. 1 '

The Progressive League ut Tuakau arc at prt-s.-iit ongagod in determining boundaries for a Town Board area with a view to having a Town Board created It will be remembered that under the Local Government Bill, introduced by the Waid Government, it was proposi d to abolish Town Boards. Wo are amongst those who believe that these hoards servo highly useful purpo es. and that wherever tho'population warrants it their establishment should be olicounged. The Town I'oaid is the stepping s'oiw between the nnplnnnod couutiy village and the more pretentious Borough Council. Wo have lately heard a good deal about the necessity lor town planning. How ean this be accomplished without the enthusiastic and painstaking guidance of some local governing b»dy? The bigger a township grows before being led in its growth by some system, the more difficult is it to remedy the defects which inevitably appear in the absence of such things as, say, permanent levels. Tuakau under the government of the sympathetic Pukokoho East lioul Boaid, and repns'til.il by such watchfid ni'ii as Me-srs Craig and Dynes Fulton, may get along tolerably well; but when the lime comes for merging into the county there is a danger of Tuakau's needs being almost entirely neglected. The majority of the canity nieinbers will probably never see Tuakau during their term of oliico ; certainly they cannot be expected to be so (ager about the progress of the township as the townspeople themselves would be. When it comes to footpath formation, the adequate lighting of the township, the regulation of the public services, and the inauguration of a drainage and sanitary scheme, what could be expected of the Couuty Council which already will have its bigger burdens and its wider couuty anxieties? In addition to all the Parliamentary talk about town planning a good deal is said about protecting the health of the people; but how are either of these important ends to be achieved utiles some form of town government is in force 'i Tuakau is a town in the making, and the time for planning is now. Its ellicieut drainage and sanitation can only be completed by a comprehensive scheme, and in the absence of any other proposals we suggest that these can best be' devised by a Town Board. The town is the outlet for the produce of a fertile back country and its future istptito assurod. I hit the future town ought to be moulded on the light lines now and to enable that to be done we hope that the effort being made to have a Town lioard established will be successful.
