PROGRESS OF PUKEKOHE.
Great Strides Being Made.
Several speeches at the function in connection with the laying of the foundation stone of the new building for the National Bank of New Zealand dealt with the progress that Pukekohe has lately made. One speaker said that in a varied experience throughout New Zealand he had not seen any place make such a distinct advance in so shoit a space of time. During the last six months: The technical school has been completed and opened. The Bank of New Zealand had built substantial two-storey brick premises. The National Bank building (which the contractor said would be the best in Pukekohe) had been g«t under weigh.
Big railway construction works have been carried out.
Improved postal, telegraphic aid telephonic services have been secured. Buckland's saleyards (the best in the North Island outside Auckland) have been completed. Lodge Excelsior, 1.0.0. F., has built a fine hall.
New shops, additions to old shops, and a number of residences have been erected. A Borough Council has been established. The Franklin County Council has come into being with its headquarters in Pukekohe. The headquarters of the Licensing Committee have likewise been founded here.
The subscribers to the telephone exchange have increased from 34 to 51. A Chamber of Commerce has been creatod. The Pukekohe and Waiuku Times has been successfully established. " These evidences of prosperity and progress," said the speaker, "were probably without parallel in New Zealand."
