PACKINGTON.
A largo and enthusiastic mooting was hold in the Packington Hall on Saturday evening, August 17th, it being the annual meeting of Packington brauch of the Waiuku Railway League. The president (Mr Albrecht) presided and during his address informed the meeting of the result of the deputation to tho Miuister for Public Works, that recently took place in Wellington. The opinion of the deputation was that the line would be authorised this session, and work commenced before tho end of next year. Tho president also oxpressed the same views, ho having just returned from Auckland. The mooting very fervently hoped that the surmises would prove correct. A hearty vote of thanks moved by Mr J. D. Chalmers, to Mr 8. T. Bossiter for his kindness in representing the leaguo, was carried with acclamation. The prisidont regretted that he would most likely be severing his connection with the district and therefore with the league, but he would always remember the pleasant time he had while being one of them. A hearty vote of thanks was tendered him for the duties he had rendered as president, and hopes were expressed where ever he was that success would attend him. The following officers were elected President, Mr J. D. Chalmers ; vice-presidents, Messrs J. B. McElwain and C. Hodgkinson ; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. Drorugool; committee, Messrs E. Gilmore, C. Cooper, F. Appelby, F. Henry, A. Sargood and Houlston. Mr Chalmers, in taking the chai •, thanked the meeting for the honour conferred on him by appointing him president, and expressed the wish that everyone would join the league, and help to further tho interest of the district. The meeting was very enthusiastic and are now waiting for the turning of the first sod.
The annual meeting of residents was held in the Packington Hall to receive the report and balance sheet of the Hall Committee. Mr J. D. Chalmers, chairman of the committee, presided. The balance sheet presented by the secretary (Mr Hodgkinson) proved very satisfactory, showing the receipts as £ll lis 3d, and th< expenditure £6 10s 2 I, leaving a balanco of £5 Is Id Two new lamps, a curtain and o portable copper were purchased during tho year, and the committee were now looking forward to further additions to the building in the near future. A hearty vote uf thanks to the retiring committee was passed, and the following were elected a now committee: — Messrs E Dromgool, J. D. Chalmers, C. Hodgkinson, F. Henry, P. Eoulston, E. Gilmore and F. Henry. During the meeting a discussion ensued whether the district should take up shares in the Waikato Bacon Factory. The matter was postponed (although the meeting seemud vory i'avuurably inclined towards the project) and Messrs Albrecht and Hodgkinson were appointed to attend a meeting to be held shortly in Waiuku and report to a future meeting. Another matter that was discussod was the supporting of a traction plant for the coming season but it was also left for further discussion, with othor matters affecting the district, when it is hoped everyone possible will attend.
A meeting of the concert committee was also held whon everything was put iu train for a very successful concert on Thursday, August 22nd. The programme will be a good one
