INADEQUATE SALARIES.
For High School Teachers. Discussed by Committee. The inadequacy of the salaries paid to the first assistants in District High Schools incidentally cropped up at the Pukekohe School Committee meeting. Mr Pilkington complained that outside there was a lack of confidence, and as a result the attendance at the High School was not what it should be.
Mr Perkins : We are powerless in the matter. If the position is .only worth £3 per week you can't expect the very best teacher. Mr Pilkington: Could we not have a chance of getting one if wo raised an extra amount by subsidy, as was suggested some time back ? The chairman said the Chief Inspector was not very keen on the subsidy, as he pointed out that the committee were nofc in a position to guarantee its continuity. Half the trouble was that parents did not put 'their hearts into the school.
In the comments which followed, much of which it is inadvisable to re port, a statement was made to the effect that the reported change of teachers had operated against the wellbeing of the school. After discussion the matter was dropped, no action being taken.
