DRURY.
Tho monthly mooting of the Drury Road Board was held on Saturday, 13th inst. Members present : Messrs Glasson, (chairman), W. J. Parker, Geo. Bremnor, McNaughton, and J Hill. A lotter was recoivod from the Franklin county clerk, wishing to know if tho Drury Road Board proposed to merge into tho council. It was resolved to reply that at the last annual mooting of ratepayers the matter was discussed and a resolution passed to the ofloct that further discussion bo deferrod for a further twelve months. Mr Flanagan, the nowly-elected county representative for tho Drury riding, attended and discussed with members several matters of importance. Mo stated that the council was likely to strike a very nominal rate this year, and that the Board's responsibility in regard to all mads must m the meantime continue.
A deputation representing the Drury Progressive League waited on the Board urging tho necessity of improving the approach to the public hall. Resolved, to favorably consider tho matter if the hall committee would cooperate. ! It was reportojd that it would bike quite twenty yards of metal to repair tho damage.' lately done by a traction engine oiti the Rama Rama road. The clerk was instructed to seud the owner jof the engine an account for £5. The clerk was an thorised te call a special meeting of the Board, to be held on the 3rd o August, when a motion would be submitted to the effect that a clause bo added to the bylaws empoweritg the Board to levy not more than 6d per ton on stone carted over the district roads. After a long discussion it was decided by three votes to two to strike a general rate of jdiiii the £. Mr W. J. Parker was iu fat or of making the rate the full peunj. lie contended that with the continually increasing traffic to maintain t ie roads in anything like passable ct ndition the Board must have more i loney. Messrs Bromner and Hill ft vored striking a rate, pointing out! that in view of the now valuation, which had more than doubled the values, anything more than the $d would be hard on many ratepayers. Mr McNaughtou said that he would prefer a loan rather than a high rate. Mr Parker was also very much \x\ favor of the loan idea. Mr McNajughton proposed that the rate be |d, and the chairman, in seconding the motion, remarked that he thought therfll was no chance of the ratepayers supporting a loan, and in regard to the rate, he knew a number of ratepayers] who wished a fairly high rate, while; others wished a low one; but he foun<jl all agroed that good roads were desirqd, and he would support the j-d rate as a middle course. Mr Parker reported that he had interviewed the Auckland survey officials re the legality of tho Board spending money on the half-chain road leading from the Opaheke siding, and was advised to write the Chief Suiveyor re the matter. The clerk was instructed accordingly. On the motion of the chairman it was unanimously decided to give the "Pukekohe and Waiuku Times " a share of the Board's advertising. It was resolved to order two trucks of metal for repairs on the South-road, and to secure the services of a firstclass surface man.
