COUNTY ELECTIONS.

First Fwrhklin Council.

A Quiet Polling.

The first Council of nine members to preside over the affairs of the Franklin County was elected on Saturday. Interest was not very keen and of the 3700 votes possible only 1334 were cast. But in view of the f.uit that there were no burning questions before the people, and that for some time to come the various Road Boards will continue to administer the affairs of their respective localities, the polling was as heavy as might reasonably be expected There was only one "walk-over"—Mr J. Henry being returned unopposed to represent Mauku and Karaka districts. The biggest fight was for Pukekohe, Messrs Dynes Fulton. H. Wilcox, J. E. West, J.#. Hamilton, and J. H. Craig being nominated. Before the time of the closing of nonrnations Mr W. Dunn, Mayor of Pukekohe, withdrew his nomination, one of his reasons being that borough work was already engaging a considerable amount of his time. After the nominations had closed Mr J. H. Craig withdrew, leaving the field at the Tuakau end free for his confrere, Mr Fultoo. Messrs Fulton and Wilcox (both members of the Pukekohe East Road Board) were returned, this riding being entitled to two members. The only seat in doubt after the main returns came in was the Awhitu riding, Mr Hamilton being 65 and Mr J. A. Renall 49, with Kobe Kobe returns to come. These reversed the position giving Mr Renall a majority of 4. Mr Motion. (Waipipi), Mr Campbell. (Hunua), Mr Flanagan (Drury), and Mr Higginsou) Waiuku) all had fairly easy victories.
