NO-LICENSE CONVENTION.
J Franklin League Meeting. j There was not a largo a*tendance at I the annual convention of tlio I'ranklin " No-license League on account of the 4 very bad weather. Mr J. A. Comrie, fl r President, was in the chair. f A proposal that Franklin should , separate from the Raglan portion of the League was agreed to on condition that the Raglan division should not he loaded with any of the expenses. Officers elected : —President, Rev E. P. Ulamirps; vice-presidents, Messrs Graham, Comrie, Routley, and the presidents of the Women's Christian Temperance Union ; exec_jve com-' ! mittee to consist of all of the League, chairman oWHe branch League, all ministers of religion and Salvation Anny officers, with power to add to their niimher; secretary, Mr 11. G. R. Mason; recording secietary, Mr M. Bell ; treasurer, Mr. J. A. Comrie. It was resolved that the membership of the League be organised on a financial basis, and the annual subscription lie 2s 6d, all subscribing members of ' the W.C.T.U. ai d other Temperance -f societies to be admitted free. Local secretaries are to be appointed in every locality in the electorate. The long services of Mr Graham, as secretary of the League, were placed on record. Representatives to the Provincial Council—Messrs Hodge and Routley. Representatives to the Auckland Convention Messrs Stevenson, Mason, Rev Blamires. Representatives to the Wellington Convention —Messrs Graham and Mason. Policy resolutions were passed as follows: 1. That this Convention urges the New Zealand Alliance to demand from Parliament the application of the democratic principle of " one vote one value " to the licensing polls. 2. That this Convention urges the New Zealand Alliance, in the event of a dissolution of Parliament, to take the necessary steps to secure the nomination and return of candidates pledged to support the simple majority princi- w. pie. \ 3. That this Convention approves the suggestion that the No-license League work to secure at least 1000 voters in each electorate to pledge themselves, irrespective of party, not to vote for any Parliamentary candidate who will not do his utmost to repeal the law which requires a three-fifths vote to abolish licenses, which is really a 50 per cent handicap. 4. 'J hat in the opinion of this Convention any suggestion to separate the Licensing from the Parliamentary poll should be opposed by the Temperance paity. 5. That the New Zealand Allifince be requested to secure such amendments of the Electoral Act as will ensure clean rolls, fair polls, and the true expression of ihe people's, will concerning the liquor tiattic. 6. This Convention urges tho New Zealand Alliance to taka steps to secure the repeal of the provision suspending for four years the operation of a vote iu favor of National Prohibition. In the evening a very pleasant gathering was held. After tea had been > partaken e»f, an adjournment toe™ place until 7.30 p.m., when Mr Connifr' again took the chair. Songs were rendered by Mrs E. P. Blamires and Mrs Pilkington, and items by the audience. The following speiiktrs dealt I with various aspects of the Temperance movement:—Rev E. P. Blamires, Rev Nixon, Mr M.
