WAIKATO RIVER BOARD.

At Saturday's meeting of the Waikato Kiver Board then; were preseut Messrs Gla«s (Chairman), Ballard, Gallery, Walker and Wily. The Otaua Drainage Board intimated that it would hold the Kiver Beard responsible for damage caused by the Board's river works. A strongly worded letter was received from the Aka Aka Drainage Board, protesting agaiust the erection of groynes and stop-banks in the Aka Aka channel, and giving notification to hold the Kiver Board responsible for damage. The Engineer's report was read, showing fair progress in pile-driving. The first punt was in commission and when the second was ready the »vork would get on faster. Willow-weaviujr in the first groyne would be finished in a fortnight. It was reported that owners of land along the river objected to having their willows remove.!. resolved that in that case the Board exercise its powers and older all owners to lemoveall trees overhanging the water. The question of suing ft r rales having come up it was resolved that the matter remain in abeyance for tho present. In this connection Mr Wily said he would have liked a case taken to see whether the Boaid could collect an ostensibly unifo.m rate, when rates aie collected in some parts of the district on unimproved values, and in other parts on capital value. It was decided that a consulting engineer be invited to visit the scene of the Board's operations on June 12, to meet the M.P'h. of Aickland, Ministers of the Crown and members of the Board. Ratepayers of Aka Aka and Otaua were also invited to be present. In view of the statement fietpirnlly made that the Board's works would injure the Aka Aka channel it was resolved that the Aka Aka and Otaua Drainage Boards be invited to send an engineer to take the levels in con junction with the Board's engineei, thus establishing data by u Inch future damage, if any, may be assessed.
