THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
Monthly Meeting. At the monthly, meeting of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce, held on Monday night, 20th inst., twenty members were in attendance. The President (Mr R. F. Webster) occupied the chair, and an apology for absence was received from Mr A. B. Barter. The New Railway Station. In connection with the correspondence regarding a visit by members of the' Chamber over the railway works now under construction, reference was made to the site of the new station, several members expressing the opinion it would be in the interests of Pukekohe to have the passenger accommodation as near the site of the present station as possible. < I | The Goods Shed. 1 The Secretary of the Pukekohe branch of the Farmers' UnionJwrote asking for the assistance of the Chamber in securing an alteration to the goods-shed by closing the two doors facing the east, and substituting for these one at each end of the shed. It was claimed that this would facilitate the handling of goods, do away with the present danger and /inconvenience, and be comparatively inexpensive. Mr Hurley considered it would be better to close the door nearer the crossing, but keep the other one in use and put a door at each end. Mr Perkins agreed with this pro-' posal. Dr. Wake thought it inadvisable to do anything until they knew how long the present shed would be in use. He moved that Mr Dansey be interviewed on the matter, and the Council then act accordingly. Mr Jackson seconded the motion, which was carried. Arterial Roads. The Auckland Provincial Industrial Association applied for information regarding the main arterial roads in the district. After some discussion over the nature of the information to be supplied, the matter was referred to the Council of the Chamber. Grading Peoduob. The President reported that the Council suggestod convening a conference of farmers and business men to consider the question of grading local produce. He pointed out that the Act would require amending to enable a grader to be stationed at an inland town. It was resolved that the President, Messrs Mclntyre and Andrew be a committee to confer with the local branch of the Farmers' Union for the purpose of calling a public meeting to consider the matter. Postal Matters. The President reported having interviewed the Postmaster regarding delays in securing telephonic communication. The Postmaster had advised that if a subscriber had cause for complaint he should ring nim (the Postmaster) up at once, so that it could be attended to. The President also stated that the work of putting up posts for the duplicate telephone line to Auckland had boon commenced. The President and Mayor were appointed a committee to wait on the local Postmaster in regard to securing the opening up of the local Post Office from 7 to 8 o'clock at nights, and the extension of tha delivery area for letters. Mr Perkins thought that the letterbox at his end of the town should be cleared every morning to permit letters going up by the first mail, and the Secretary was instructed to write te the Postmaster on the matter. Increasing the number of subscribers to the telephone was discussed, and the Secretary was asked to endeavor :o bring in new subscribers. General. The Secretary reported that the )ddfellows had agreed to charge the jhamber 8s per month for the use of he hall. It was decided to open an account vith the National Bank. Mr Perkins hoped the Chamber rould endeavor to make the opening; >f the Technical School a success. Mr Mclntyre mentioned the matter i disposal of night-soil.
