AFTER THE HOUNDS.

By "Tally-Ho."

On Thursday, 16th inst., the Waiuku branch of the Pakuranga Hunt Club held their opening day, and were favored with delightful weather. The meet took place at Waitangi four cross roads, and a start was made on Mr C. T. Barriball's property. Not finding there, we passed on to Mr Eber Barriball's place, where puss get well away and gave a fine chase, which lasted some considerable time and took the Mowers over ideal hunting country, the properties being those of Messrs Eber Barriball, C. Harris, ShakespearandWm. James. Throughout the run the hounds stuck well to their work, and when crossing the property of the last-named gentleman, though in a straight run, a capture was made. At this stage a bait was made, the horses all needing a blow. We next proceeded to the property of Mr H. Parry, but not finding there we crossed over to Messrs C. T. Barriball's, Dovall's and Lawton's, but nothing was put up until coming on to Mr Budge's property, where a fine hare made straightaway over the bill, but was soon caught, only affording a comparatively short run. It was a very short time before another find was effected, this being on the property of Mr E. Walters. Puss made straightaway across Messrs Moorehead Bros.' place, and gave a run which lasted too long for many of the hunters, although the Huntsman, Whip, and a few followers kept well up. The hounds had now to be called off, having to return by train to kennels the same evening. During the afternoon there were were about sixty followers, including a fair number of ladies, amongst whom Miss Buth Henry was conspicuous for her good riding. It is impossible to mention many who were following, but a few were:— Mr Selby (Huntsman), on Te Akau; Master Swaffield (Whip), on a clever black pony; Mr E. T. Bent (Master), on Tom Burns; Dr. Howden (Grey Boy), Messrs Geo. Currie (on that good jumper, Dominion), P. V. Flexman (Sylvia), C. T. Barriball (Lucy), Ernest Henry (on a slashing bay colt), Mellsop Bros, (on a pair of chestnuts), C. J. Hosking (Young Lover), W. McEwen (Black Mite), H. Jefferies (on a bay), Joseph Grim wood (on a thoroughbred), Jas. Short (The Rambler), J. Huntliug (Miss Hippo), Sydney Holmes (Simmons), A. White (Bold Ned). Owing to the Huntsman being unable to supply the two extra days hunting last season, he has promised to give those two extra days this season, in addition to our usual number. We can, therefore, expect seven days' hunting yet in store for us, and should they prove as good as the opening run, they will be most enjoyable. ,
