The Mayoral Speech. taking hands all round, His rship welcomed the Councillors to table. He heartily congratulated munon the mark of esteem and reciation of the people, set upon mby their election. He remarked, t if a man bought a piece of land, ei horse, he wanted all sorts of iuments and warranties, but with Council the people placed the ole of their funds at its disposal, re it the right to say how much per aum they would pay in rates, and ;hout any guarantee—placed entirein the "hands of the Council the htto decide the conditions under ich they (the ratepayers) should e. Directors were paid and were itricted, but a seat on the Council s a post of honour and the Council s given wide power. It was theree their duly to tarry out that trust the best of their skill and ability, e heavy polling had shown the #rest the people had taken in the rmation of the borough, and also eir patriotism. Tbe books of the ,uncil and their meetings were open the ratepayers who, during his term office, would always be welcome. Ie Mayor concluded, auiidst apause, by expressing appreciation of e splendid and straightforward way which the borough elections had en conducted. Councillors Johns, Hamilton and lW rie congratulated the Mttyor upon i election. llr Patterson was appointed temrary clerk and treasurer. The iyor and Councillor Lawrie were pointed to operate the accounts. Municipal Chambers. Th Mayor said it would be a good ft to make temporary arrangements (wo or three months, and as Pukehe would be the headquarters of the anklin County they should see if th bodies could work together for b erection of municipal chambers. Councillors Lawrie and Comrie were pointed to make enquiries about a Jeting room, with power to act. Ihe Mayor (who announced that he (1 to catch a train to go to the ia mes to attend the funeral of an old end, the Hon. J. McGowan) then ired. Councillor Lawrie was pointed Acting-Mayor. Accounts were passed for payment. Jhe Actirtg-Mayor: How are the ances, Mr Town Clerk ? Acting Town Clerk: Oh, we have a id or two. iii.
