Mauku. An Interesting Story. About a Mauku Identity. An esteemed correspondent writes : In connec ion with the death of one of our very radh'St settlers (Mr T. Lloyd), who has just passed away at the ripe a<;9 of eighty, a rather cuiious incident lias becen recalled to me. Before' coming to New Zealand Mr Lloyd was employed as a diver on the Cape Town breakwater. One day when coming off his shift his party was passing a large emigrant ship lying in the harbour. Seeing some commotion aboard they pulled in close and were hailed by a passenger who saw the diver's dress aboard their boat. It appeared the passenger had dropped a pocket book overboard and he asked if the diver would get it for him. Mr Lloyd promptly put on his dress and went down and had no trouble locating the pocket book as 'it was silver mounted and the water was as clear as glass. Some years after Lloyd decided to come to New Zealand and he settled in Pukekohe, at the Cape settlement. Making tho acquaintance of Mr Adams (father of Mr Joe Adams, of Pukekohe) they were one day chatting when Mr Adams told him of an experience he had at Cape Town when coming to New Zealand regarding a pocket book he had dropped into the" harbour. When he finished he said: " "Well, I suppose I'll never see that diver again, but what he rescused for me contained all I possessed in the world and started me here." "Oh yes, you will," said Mr Lloyd, "I was that diver, and I remember the incident well!"
