Tuakau.
During October a Progressive League was formed here, but so far no visible success has attended its existence. Various improvements have been discussed at different meetings of the League, among them being town board government, improved postal facilities, stopping of the Rotorua express and stock sales. The matter of paramount importance is the improvement of the roads in the immediate vicinity. Just now they present a rather pitiful appearance and a crossing of them is taken at much displeasure. Our member W. D. Fulton, is pressing hard for better conditions and he has obtained various grants. It does seem strong — and wrong—that a township of the size of Tuakau should suffer roads which would discredit any backblocks settlement. The interests of Pukekawa are now being looked after by a progressive association, and in a new settlement such as Pukekawa there is always a fine field for much useful work. The proposed new road between here and Whangarata has been surveyed and n number of trees standing in the way have been cleared so that everything is ready for a start in the actual cutting of the road.
