The following is the result of the Manukau Cricket Association's competition for Mr W. H. Warm's cup which, after a keen contest, has been won by those " good sports of Mauku"; - Mauku 19 points, Waiuku 18, Pukekohe B. 17, Drury 8, Pukekohe A. 4. Pokeno 3. The Mauku Club intend holding one of their popular social evenings shortly, when the cup will be presented.
There was one of the occasions which show the harmony of the district when a social function was held at the Patumahoe Hall on Friday night (8th) to wish Mr Henry Howard (who is leaving the district) every success in his new adventures. A varied programme was provided of dances, songs and recitations, and the piano was presided over by Miss Vera Bailey. In the interval a presentation was made of a silver tea service (pot, jug, sugar) which was handed to the recipient by Mr Jas. Henry with words that met the approbation of those assembled in a very hearty manner. Mr Howard suitably responded and Mrs H. Howard also thanked the company. A meeting of the Mauku Road
Board was held at the hall on Saturday when various items were passed for payment and some fresh contracts issued.
The roads in the district will be a great improvement this winter to what they were last winter as the metalling has been carried forward much quicker than anticipated. Although causing at present a temporary inconvenience, the benefit will be found later on.
The first assembly and drill of the Territorials was held at the hall the - same night and the newly-formed contingent showed an appreciation of the lucid instructions of Sergt. Major Bell, and took a keen interest in the work.
The profit of the picnic and dance promoted by the Farmers' Union netted over £6.
For a long time there have been complaints of the insufficient accommodation in the telephone bureau at Mauku and Patumahoe. At its last meeting the local branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union decided to approach the authorities about the matter, through the Provincial Executive. The present arrangements are very unsatisfactory both to the storekeepers at whose places the public telephones are installed and to everybody desiring to use the telephone.
