Bowling.
OPENING DAY. i At Matamata Green. The official opening ceremony of the Matamata Bowling Club’s green took place on Saturday. Despite the fact that the weather was most unpropitious in the morning and heavy rain fell, there was a big attendance of bowlers from Tauranga, Morrinsville, Putaruru, Hamilton, Te Aroha and other more local clubs. In consequence of the rain the green was somewhat heavy, but otherwise was in excellent condition. In welcoming visiting bowlers, Mr. W. Egan, president, stated that it gave him great pleasure to welcome so many visitors in view of the wet morning. He congratulated members of the Matamata club on securing so many honours last season, when the Howden and Clothier Shields were won, together with the Goldfields Stars, the Fraser Stars for pairs and a silver cup from the Tauranga tournament. The club and district appreciated these honours won by club members. (Applause). Mrs. Egan then threw up the jack, being applauded for a short head. In response to an invitation from the home president, Mr. Pilkington, president of the South Auckland centre, spoke a few words. He stated that he hardly expected the honour, as he knew' the ladies and bowlers would be desirous of getting on with their games. However, he was pleased to speak on behalf of the Centre, and he congratulated the club in having such an excellent representative on the central committee as Mr. Peter Stewart. As well as his ability as a player he possessed foresight and was an asset on the committee. He hoped the president would have a happy year in office, and the club a successful season. Their success last year was a record for the Waikato.
Mr. Egan then formally opened the ci- ■ ;uct greens, congratulating the 1. ies on the great progress they had ri.ade in providing extra greens.
