Hinuera.

Presentation. On Saturday a pleasant little func- i tion took place at the Hinuera tennis courts, where, prior to her marriage, Miss Hazel Green was presented by the club with a silver cake Basket. Miss Green has been a very popular member, of the club for several years . and is the top lady player. Mr. S. Collins, chairman of the tennis committee, made the presentation in lieu of the president, Mr. T. Corry, who was unable to be present. Mr. W. Horne thanked the club members on Mis 3 Green’s behalf. A dainty afternoon tea was served. Deputation. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. P. Hawke, J. Harris, H. C. Pond, H. Mann and W. Maud, from the Hinuera Ratepayers’ Association, waited on the chairman and engineer of the Matamata County Council last week to petition for the straightening of the road which passes the bowling green near the railway station. If this work were done the extra ground space on one side of the road would be utilised as a parking ground for the numerous cars belonging to members of the various sports clubs. The space on the other side—now part of the railway plantation—would make an excellent playing area for the children. Valedictory. Prior to his departure for England last week Mr. J. Beeby was tendered a farewell party by a number of his friends, who gathered at the residence of Mr. E. Worth - to wish him “bon voyage. On behalf of those present Mr.* J. Bain presented Mr. Beeby with a well-filled wallet. Mr. Beeby left for Christchurch, where he visited his small daughter, and then sailed by the Tamaroa from Wellington. He will visit Cumberland his home county and other parts of the British Isles.

Personal. Among those present at the school picnic were Mr. and Mrs. S. Harding, of Wanganui*, who have been visiting Mrs. S. Wright en route from Rotorua. Mr. Harding was once a resident cf Hinuera and took a keen interest in school matters, being for some time chairman of the School Committee. Mr. and Mrs. Harding were warmly welcomed by old friends. A pleasing function in connection with the recent school picnic was the presentation to Miss Muriel Cooke and Master Max Sweetman of special prizes in recognition of their great assistance given last year during their term as senior prefects.' Last Tuesday, owing to the generosity of Messrs. H. Settle and McCallum, the children of the school were able to listen in to the relay of Commander Byrd’s address.
