POLLED HEREFORDS.
BREEDERS IMPRESSED. Recently there was announced the arrival in New Zealand of a Polled Hereford bull from the United States where this strain of the well-known white face enjoys a separate identity and already claims its own herd book. The new arrival is a well-grown, 18-months’-old animal, of high degree. He is at present in quarantine on Somes Island where he was inspected by a good many interested breeders. A few days ago a well-known Southland breeder of Herefords was amongst those who called at Somes Island and this gentleman at once fell in love with the young bull. Our friend advises us that the bull represents all _ the best charcteristics ot the Hereford breed minus the horns. The bull has been imported for a Gisborne breeder but we are reliably informed that an effort will be made to secure his services on behalf of a Southland breeder or that another sire of the breed will be brought across the water to do service on a Southland stud farm. There seems to be no reason why the Polled Hereford should not be as popular here as in the land of its isolaton as a separ ate strain.—Southland Times.
