A CONTRADICTED STATEMENT.
VETERINARY SCHEME. Explanation by President. “ I do not think we treated the committee at all well,” said Mr. J. E. Leeson in moving a vote of thanks to the committee that prepared a report on the proposal to secure the services of a veterinarian for Morrinsville, at Saturday evening’s meeting of the Morrinsville branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mr. Leeson said the members of the committee had put in a lot of work, and their recommendations were promptly turned down.
Mr. P. S. Philpott, in seconding, said the efforts of the committee were not wasted, as the information was valuable and caused a good deal of discussion. The motion was carried. The president (Mr. G. Pirrit) said there was apparently some misunderstanding regarding Mr. Burton’s statement to him. The position was that Mr. Burton had rung the speaker up and told him, he understood, that he had accepted a position at £IOOO a year. This information had been conveyed to the branch and had been published. Subsequent to the meeting Mr. Burton again rang and denied saying that he had accepted the offer. He had added that the Hamilton people were up in arms and that he had had to give an assurance that he had no intention of leaving Hamilton. Following this Mr. Burton had put a contradiction in the paper. “If I misunderstood Mr. Burton through the telephone I must apologise,” said Mr. Pirrit. “ Some of the statements in the contradiction are hardly correct, as Mr. Burton, at a meeting of the branch, said ho proposed coming to Morrinsville if
suitable arrangements could be made. He also stated that he had an option over a house. When talking to me over the telephone prior to the meeting he said the option on the house expired that morning and he did not think it was worth while renewing it in view of the other offer.”
