ANOTHER INCREASE.
IN HOSPITAL CHARGES. Waikato Follows Auckland. Members of the Matamata County Council were enabled to relieve their feelings somewhat on the vexed l question of hospital rates when a letter was received from the Waikato Hospital Board anent further capital expenditure. The letter stated that subsequent to the notice given to contributory local authorities of the levy required to meet the net estimated expenditure for the current financial year the board had decided on capital expenditure amounting to £3500 for an infectious diseases ward. It was proposed to meet this cost out of overdraft. The chairman said the letter meant another levy.
The clerk concurred, saying it appeared that the extra cost would be added to next year’s levy. Cr. Dee : They are breaking the news gently. The clerk said that from reports he had seen this was only the advance guard, so to speak.
Cr. Cox pointed out that they could only protest; they would stiil have to pay. Cr. Allen (emphatically) : Nationalise them. Voices : It would still come back on the land. Having indulged in some further comment, all of which is customary by members of local bodies who “ pay but have no say ” in hospital administration, the council received the letter.
