TIRAU CROSSING.
AGAIN DEFERRED. Signals Suggested. The District Highways Council concerned writing to the Matamata County Council with reference to the level crossing at Tirau, stated that the whole policy in regard to the elimination of such crossings, especially as the Railway Department was concerned was in the air. Instead of appropriating large sums for the building of overbridges or subways, as the case may be, the Department was undertaking to a greater degree the erection of automatic warning devices. The whole matter has recently been investigated with a view to determining what will be done in each case in the future. Until the Railway Department has settled its policy it will not make funds available for the cost of elimination of the crossing at Tirau, and so long as the Railways Department maintains that attitude the Highways Board will be unable to make funds available. The engineer: A lot of things are in the melting pot just now. Cr. Allen thought they should shake up the Railway Department. Members had to consider life and property. He moved that the Department’s attention be again drawn to the dangerous nature of the Tirau crossing.
Cr. Dee seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously. The engineer commented that the ;wo recent accidents had happened to vehicles approaching from the town side and to obviate that the Department had put signs on the other side. (Laughter).
