“ I learnt to-day by mere chance what is the derivation of the word ‘ kit cat ’ as applied to a picture,” said His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Sir Charles Fergusson, at the opening of the Academy Exhibition. The size of a “ kit eat ” picture was 36 by 28 inches, he said, and got its name from a literary club in London in the early part of the 18th century. The cook to the club was named Christopher Cat, or “ Kit Cat,” and Kneller had painted portraits of the club members to the sized mentioned. Hence the term as applied to pictures.
