BOWLING, TENNIS & CROQUET

ANNUAL MEETING OP CLUB The Recent Carnival. The annual meeting of the Putaruru Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club (inc.), presided over by the president, Mr. T. F. Snell, was held on Thursday and was marked by a small attendance. Report.

The annual report, which was adopted on the motion of Messrs. A. G. Leggatt and Rolfe, stated, inter alia:—

“ The grounds for the most part were in very fair conditiqp, and showed a distinct improvement on the previous season. “ The tennis season was a most successful one. The club’s A grade team reached the final of the Waikato East Tennis Association’s interclub competition, which was won by the Matamata club. The club’s captain again won the men’s championship singles at the New Year at Matamata. The many inter-club matches played were keenly enjoyed and improved the standard of play of members.

“ During the year the tennis lawns have. been top-dressed and improved, and will be in first-class order for the coining season. “ The bowling- green played extremely well and though not as fast as desired, provided very interesting competitions. Matches were played with the neighbouring clubs, and were closely contested and thoroughly enjoyed. “ The green suffered from insufficient play, but it is hoped will be patronised more during- the coming season.

“ The croquet lawns are now enlarged and should meet the immediate requirements of this section. The trustees have been requested to provide a shelter for the croquet ladies, and this was approved but is not yet constructed. “ A quick growing hedge has been promised by a bowling member for the road fence, and will prove a great benefit to bowlers and croquet players in a season or two. “ The trustees wish to record their appreciation of the efforts of individual members of the sections in the queen carnival, held during the papt year. This resulted in approximately £3OO being raised and is considered a noble effort. The result of this is that the mortgage was reduced by half, and was followed by a guarantee on the part of several members to the Bank of New Zealand to enable the whole of the mortgage to be cleared off.

“ We now have, instead of a £4OO mortgage, an overdraft limit at the bank of £2OO. It is hoped that this good work will be followed up by another effort to raise £2OO, and so make the park free of debt. “ In conclusion, your trustees view the coming season with every confidence that the club will prosper and benefit by the increased enthusiasm shown by members. The efforts of ail who worked on the different sectional committees and the ladies who worked so energetically in entertaining visitors, are very much appreciated.” Trustees.

Messrs. T. F. Snell, A. C. Thompson, A. G. Leggatt, N. Gibson and F. J. B. Whyte were elected trustees. Erection of Shelter. Mr. Snell brought several items that the trustees stood committed to attend, namely, the erection of a shelter for the croquet section and a locker for the storage of crockery, before the meeting. An offer had been made to supply the crockery if a locker were provided.—lt was decided that the meeting recommend these items to the trustees for attention. Seats Wanted. Mr. Thompson stated that more seats were wanted. Mr. Snell said that this matter had been raised after the close of last season, and several surprise parties had been held, the proceeds of which were to provide seats. Appreciation. On the motion of Messrs. Leggatt and Snell, appreciation of the services of Mr. J. S. Reid as secretary was recorded. Similar resolutions were passed in respect to Messrs. A. H.' Dukeson, junr., and S. J. Parker and letters are to be sent to the three gentlemen. Opening Day.

It was decided to hold the official opening day of the three sections on Saturday, October 19.
