Tirau.

Hard-up and Poster Dance. On Tuesday night the Tirau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a hard-up and poster dance in the Tirau Hall in aid of rest room funds. The entertainment was a great success and the numerous costumes were a source of much amusement to the large crowd present. Excellent music was provided by Mrs. McLaren and orchestra, extras being played by Mfs. Selby. Mrs. Tinkier and Mr. Kuhtz as “ Mr. and Mrs. Kelly ” were the prize winners in the hard-up section. Miss Shaw (Minties) and Mr. Thomas (Horscroft’s Bakery) carried off the honours in the posters. Special mention is due also to Miss Dagg (Mother), Mr. McDonald (Father), Mr. Campbell (Son) and Miss C. Webster (Daughter). Other “hardups ” were Mrs. Bear (Auntie Louisa), Miss Ketlar and Mr. Mason. Other posters were Mrs. N. Coubrough (Rose Bros.), Mrs. Hetherington (Fashion Plate), Mrs. W. Allen (Amalgamated Wireless), Miss Inman (Palmolive Soap), Miss Goodwin (Dixieland), Miss Syme (Minties), Miss Allen (Bottle of Champagne), Miss E. Allen (Exporter), Miss Kuhtz (Matamata County Council), Miss Clarke (Pictures), Miss Newport (Paperhanger), Mr. Maxwell (Horscroft’s Bakery), Mr. Taylor (Bell Tea) and Mr. Tilly (Challenge Manures). The judges were Mr. and Mrs. J. Rolfe, of Putaruru.

Personal. Rev. W. T. Brabyn is at present indisposed. 1 Mrs. W. Craig is to undergo an operation in a Hamilton hospital. Tennis Club. The annual meeting of the Tirau Tennis Club was held in the library on Monday evening, there being only a small attendance. The president, Mr. J. Keane, presided. The balance-sheet showed a small credit'balance and was adopted without discussion.

The election of officers resulted as follows : Patron, Mr. W. Hetherington ; president, Mr. J. Keane ; vicepresidents, Messrs. F. Rose, E. W. Jordan, S. J. Bear and N. Horscroft; committee, Mrs. A. Bonney, Misses Cowan, Clarke, Harrison, Messrs. Bragg, Hawes, Neill, Gray, Selby, Rev. W. T. Brabyn ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. Wilson ; auditor, Mr. E. V/. Jordan ; selector, Mr. H. Selby ; club captain, Mr. Bragg ; vice-captain, Mrs. W. Craig ; selectors, Mrs. A. Bonney and Mr. H. Selby ; delegates to Waikato East Association, Messrs. Bragg and Wilson.

The following were the winners of the club championships : Ladies’ singles, Mrs. A. Bonney ; ladies’ doubles, Mrs. A. Bonney and Miss J. Stewart ; men’s singles, Mr. J. Hawes ; men’s doubles, Messrs. Hawes and Bragg ; combined doubles, Mrs. Bonney and Mr. H. Selby. The president congratulated the C grade team on winning the grade cup in the Waikato Association’s tournament.
