“NOT UNDERSTOOD”
THE MATTER OF A LOAN. State Advances and Town Board The following somewhat peculiar letter has been received by the Putaruru Chamber of ‘Commerce from the Minister of Finance, Sir Joseph Ward:—
, “ The Minister of Lands has referred to me your representations in regard to the proposed application of the Putaruru Town Board for a loan. In reply I desire to say that I have communicated on the subject with the' State Advances Superintendent, who informs me that owing to the demands made on its resources the department is not at present in a position to entertain the application. In the circumstances I regret that the Advances Department should he unable to render the Town Board the assistance it desires.” This letter apparently refers to a statement made to the Minister of .Lands when he was in Putaruru last March to the effect that the Town .Board had on its formation been deified a loan both from the State Advances Department and the Public Trust Office, tills refusal, the local bodies who formed the deputation Ik opined, being due to the stigma at- ' taching to the district by reason of alleged bush sickness. The Minister was asked for an inquiry, and apparently the Minister of Finance has been wrongly informed, the tone of the letter giving the impression that j the Town Board had made recent application. This is not the case. The letter, however, is illuminative on one point, and that is the fact that the Advances Department has '■>. not met all • applications for loans, as has been stated.
