(A COLUMN FOR THE PEOPLE) HERD-TESTING. (To the Editor) Sir, —For the leading herd of the Putaruru group of the New Zealand Herd-testing Association to give only 281.33 pounds of butterfat in 260 days is very poor compared with some other districts, but as this herd is mine I am giving some details which make it a little better. included in the 27 cows’ average were two cows sold early in the season, three winter cows, one 18months heifer and nine second calvers. No extra feed for the dry season was provided when the herd average slumped badly but made recovery in the autumn. Practically all the cows were bred on the place or purchased locally at little expense, mostly as calvers. Also this was the first season of testing and there were a number of cows in the herd that would not have been there had I previously tested. The cows were machine-milked. It is worthy of note that Messrs. Nicholson and Little, of the Wiltsdown district, headed the group last season. —I am, etc., F. SLADE-GULLY. Wiltsdown, Lichfield.
