DAMAGE TO ROADS.
INSPECTORS URGED.
By Highways Board.
In a circular letter to the Matamata County Council the Main Highways Board stated that local bodies
did not appear to realise the damage | which was being done to roads by the non-enforcement of the motor vehicles regulations. In Hawke's Bay eight local bodies' combined to employ a full-time inspector, who visited each local body once a fortnight. . The inspector’s salary was paid 'by brie body, which collected from the others their shares pro rata on a capital value basis. The letter suggested ' that a similar system corild be operated with advantage by otlier bodies In other districts. The clerk said a visit once a fortnight would be of, . little good. The engineer pointed out that eight bodies were-'- doing it in this area ’ but only one was paying. (sr. Dke : That' is Matamata.
The Engineer : 'Yes, I think we are the only 1 jgtfiffebling block from Auckland to Napier. Cr. Dee : The only progressive body.
Cr. Cox : The letter should certainly be read to the Rotorua deputation.
Cr. Allen then moved that a reply be sent that the council was already employing an inspector and had no objection to sharing the cost. The chairman pointed out that the local bodies between Hamilton and Auckland would do nothing, and if an inspector was wanted anywhere it was there, where they were always complaining in regard to damage to the road. Cr. Cox secpnded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
