NO MORE LOST BUTTONS.
USEFUL SUGGESTIONS. t When sewing buttons on garments, see that the knot is Dlaced on the right side of the material, directly under the button. The thread will be far 'less likely to break or become loosened, and the button will not easily pull off. Linen buttons on underwear will remain in position almost twice as long if they are steeped in cold water anu dried before being sewn on. By first i shrinking the linen in this way, you i make the button more elastic, so that j it “gives” round the outer edge with- | out straining the centre. ' To keep buttons on coats, gloves, shoes and all wearing apparel subject to the atmosphere, sew- them with thread or cotton previously waxed or oiled. Just draw the strands between the thumb and finger lightly moistened in machine oil, or aJoug a piece of beeswax, or even a tallow candle. This will keep the thread thoroughly waterproof, increase its strength, and pre- ; vent th e button eyelets from chafing through the strands. When sewing buttons on children’s wear and men’s overalls, use gardeners’ raffia tape in preference to thread c-r cotton. Twopennyworth of the tape will last for years, each piece being split lengthwise into six or nine Strands, according to the thickness required- Give each raffia strand a few rubs with a piece of beeswax, and sew on the buttons in the usual way.
