MOTOR NOTES.

* CARBURETTOR TUNING.

CHARACTER OF MIXTURE. When adjusting a carburettor much aiseful information may be derived as "to the character of the mixture by .studying the nature of the exhaust flames as they leave tile manifold, for which purpose the pipe leading ■to the silencer should be disconnected. In the case of an excessively-weak the flames will have very little intensity and will possess a ■whitish-blue colour. A medium weak mixture will cause a little more flame intensity, and the blue colour will become more distinct. When the adjustments have been successful, and the carburettor has the proper size of jets and choke, the exhaust will Rave the maximum flame intensity with the clear blue colour. The colour of flame with a medium rich mixture will be light blue with ■traces of yellow and will turn to "bright yellow or orange-yellow as the mixture increases in strength.

The flame indications referred to above Jwill be found of great service in carburettor tuning, and, if studied intelligently, will save much time in •selecting the correct sizes in jets, ■chokes and tubes to give the maximum efficiency' and best petrol consumption.
