EXCHANGE PROPOSAL.
BLOCK FOR FORESTRY. Attitude of Chamber.
At Monday’s meeting of the Putaruru Chamuer of Commerce, me cna-rmau A Mr. J. W. Barr urown) stated that Mr. Fraser, of N.Z. Perpetual Forests, had approached him with a view to o „ raining the chamber’s support for a proposed exchange ot otacey s block ol rB,BOO acres oelow Lake Taupo for a block of land across the Waikato river from the company’s Maraetai block. Mr. Fraser had approached the Minister of Lands, wno,/ while favouring the suggestion, suggested that owing to tne agitation of the New Zealand Land Settlement League and the Chamber of Commerce he did not feel inclined at present to accede to the request. Mr. Dukeson gave further details and explained that if the company were not granted the exchange it would be compelled to shift its base of operations to Napier, with consequent loss of business for Putaruru. General expression of approval was made. Mr. Dukeson mentioned that the Land Settlement League had approved the scheme. Mr. Spear suggested that the Government would probably be able to work in with the company in the provision of road and bridge access for the Wharepuhunga block, and he moved that the chamber express approval of the scheme to the Minister and request that provision be made for road and bridge access to provide for the future settlement of the Wharepuhunga block. This was seconded by Mr. Simpson and carried.
