TIRAU CROSSING.
ONE OF MOST DANGEROUS. Protest Against Delay. The Public Works Department, Hamilton, writing to the last meeting of the Matamata County Council in regard to the elimination of the level crossing at Tirau, stated that the chairman of the Main Highways Board advised that the Railways Department stated that the proposals which had been submitted were satisfactory, and the estimated cost of the bridge was £I3OO, making the total cost of the ridge and deviation £3911., The Railways Department had decided to erect automatic warning devices at many crossings. On this account the Department had decided to defer the question of the elimination of the crossing until the general question had been settled. Cr. Allen said it seemed to him a question of putting off the evil day all the time and he thought the council should enter an emphatic protest. The engineer explained that the council’s share would have been £SOO. On the motion of Crs. Allen and Wilson it' was decided to enter an emphatic protest against the delay, as the crossing was one of the most dangerous in the Auckland province. Cr. Wilson urged that a something be done to the bridge below the crossing.
The engineer explained that the curve was put in after consultation
with Arclrlond to fit in with the proposed overhead bridge. In time a two-way bridge would come. At a rough estimate it would cost £IOOO to widen the bridge. Cr. Cox • (facetiously) : All that is wanted is a few girders over the top with a ramp up each side. (Laughter.) The Engineer : It would be a bit awkward if a road roller went over close to one side and there was nothing on the other to balance it. (Laughter.) The matter then dropped.
