MATAMATA. There was a heavy yarding in all departments at the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company’s sale last Wednesday. Late rates were maintained. Cattle.— Fat cows £8 13s to £lO 4s. Only an average yarding came forward at the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company’s sale at Morrinsville on Friday. There was keen competition for good-quality lines of beef, which sold at late rates. Few sheep were penned, there being practically no fats. A large yarding of heifers came forward, and those showing quality and well forward in calf attracted spirited bidding. Figs made late rates. Y HAMILTON. At the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company s sale at Frankton on Tuesday there was a good attendance of buyers, and competition was hrisk. Sheep were penned in large numbers, while fair yaraings of store pigs sold readily. Prices ■were:— Heef. — Good steers, £l2 17s 6d to £ls 10s. Lighter steers, £lO 10s to £ll 7s. Messrs. W. and W. Ogden. There was a large attendance of buyers present on Friday, when the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company held a clearing sale on Messrs. W. and \V. Ogden’s farm, Waharoa road, Matamata. The herd offered was a picked one of 85 cows, the culls having been sold previously. For the past three years Messrs. Ogdens’ herd of 100 cows has produced an average of 300 pounds cf butteifat per cow, and for last season the returns were : Butterfat, 81, 1 863 pounds ; average per cow, £23 pounds ; gross cheque, £2484 17s 7d : nett cheque after deductions for goods, butter, N.Z.F.U.y «tc., £2l-11 Cs Id.

The cat Lie offered were mostly second, third and fourth calvers with ■well-grown frames and in exceplion-ally-gocd conditicn. The animals ■were o" Jersey, Jersey-cross, Shorthorn and a few Holstein strain and due to calve in July, August and September. The top prices realised were £22, paid by Mr. J. Harper, Walton, and £2l (twice), paid by Mr. S. D. Russell, Rotorua. The average worked out at nearly £l4 per head, with the' total for the herd of 85 well over fear figures.

Cows in milk for various periods since last January sold as follow : Mr. D. Russell, Rotorua, £ls, £7 15s ; Mr. F. Livingstone, Walton, £7 5s (2), £4 ; Mr. T. Mulholland, £4 (4), £2 ; Mr. J. W. Anderson, £6 ; Mr. D. Shine, £5 15s (2), £5 10s ; Mr. Hawe, £5 5s ; Mr. W. F. Harding, £2 ss. Twenty-two choice heifer calves from picked cows in the herd and by a Shorthorn hull were offered in two lots. The heifers were well grown and in splendid condition. A pen of 22 brought £6 10s per head, the buyer being Mr. J. Fohlen, Matamata, while a pen of seven, mixed colours, was bought fcy Mr. W. D. Simpson at £5 10s per head. The medium draught horses offered Were of good stamp and any trial was offered. Prices were.: Mare, eight years, £32 ; aged mare,. £l7 10s ; gelding, seven years, £26 10s : mare, rising eight years, £29 ; aged mare, £3O ; gelding, five years, £2B. A nuggety hack realised £5 ss. Dead stock sold at good rates. Mr. G. Were. The value of herd-testing was exemplified at the sale conducted by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company and Dalgety and Company of the Jersey herd of Mr. G. Were, Motumaoho, on Monday. The average for the 70 cows sold was £l6 Is 3d, the aggregate for the herd being, well over £IOOO. The cows had heen tested, and the records of each cow were given to prospective purchasers. Top price of £25 was paid by Mr. A. E. Putt, of Tauranga, for a four-year-old cow that produced 5561 b of fat in 306 days last season.; The performances of the cows realising over £2O were as follow : £23, 3881 b in 276 days ; £2l 10s, 4771 b in 293 days ; £23, 300 lb in 296 days (two years old); £2O, 3591 b in 250 days ; £2O, 4411 b in 296 days ; £23,. 3771 b in 265 days ; £24 10s, 4401 b in 310 days ; £24 10s, 5161 b in 327 days ; £2O 10s, 4171 b in 271 days. The cows had all been served by the pedigree Jersey sires Sunflower’s Superlative or Marshlands Eminent Chief.

There was a large bench of buyers and bidding was keen throughout. The herd was recognised as containing some of the best grade Jersey cows in the district, and though the prices realised were high they by no means flattered the stock. The pedigree Jersey bull Morsb-l-’nd’s Eminent Chief was bought by Mr. D. Smith, of Piako, for 2.V--'S. The other sire. Sunflower’s Superlative. was Twssed in at 12gns. A line of 24 marked Jersey heifer yearling c-lves was bought bv M. and P. E. Harney for £7 5s a head. Mr. J. Bowers. The sale bv auction of Mr. J. Bowers’ herd, which had been postponed on account of boisterous weather, was held by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company at the Morrinsville yards on Friday. Mr. Bowers, who has sold his farm at Studholme street, Morrinsville. offered 53 Jersey and Jersey-cross dairy cows, in calf to a pedigree Jersey bull, and due to calve in July and August. The herd was stated to have done exceptionally well during the past season.

A number of the cows were passed in but the average price of 33 sold amounted to £ll 2s. Top price was £l3, which was paid for three, the remainder selling as follow : Two at £l2 Kb, five at £l2, two at £ll 10s, three at £ll, six at £lO 10s, five ay

£lO, two at £9 10s, six at £9. Jersey and Jersey-croks cows made from £ll to £l3, other Jerseys selling at from £9 to £lO 10s. An average price of £l2 15s for cows and approximately £lO for heifers was realised at the clearance sale of Mrs. O. R. Farrer’s Fairmont grade herd at ICereone conducted by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company on Thursday. The heifers were of good quality, being Jersey and Jersey cross. There was a good bench of buyers despite very cold weather. The purchasers included the following:—

The pedigree Jersey hull Premier Black Magic was bought by Kereone Ltd. for 20 guineas, and the bull Taurimhs Lad was bought by D Sainsbury, Pulfetaha, for 18gns.

Prices for the 3000 head of sheep sold were • as follow : Ewe hoggets 31s 6d, wether hoggets 26s 9d, fat wethers 37s 6d, empty ewes 20s to 255, two-tooth wethers * fat and forward 35s 6d, forward wethers 31s 3d, Southdown rams 4 to 61 guineas. Sheep offered on behalf of Kereone Ltd. sold as follow : Five-year to sixyear ewes in lamb 30s, two-tooth ewes in lamb 38s. 6d. Mr. John Moir. A bitterly cold wind with driving rain and the fact that the homestead is situated on an unmetalled sideroad some miles from the main road, no doubt was responsible for the small attendance of buyers on Thursday when the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co,, Ltd., conducted .a clearing sale for Mr. John Moir, of Buckland road, Hinuera. Despite the few buyers, prices were very satisfactory, and thq average price for the herd of Jersey, Jersey-cross and Friesian cows, worked out at £9 12s, with the total nearly £7OO.

Top price was paid by Mr. D. Bourke, Pukerimo, Cambridge, who went to £l6, while the largest buyer was Messrs. Crabb Bros., Matamata, who purchased cows at £9, £8 10s, £lO 10s, £4, £lO (2), £lO 10s, £6 ss, £8 10s (2), £9 and £6. Other buyers were: Mr. J. RClimo, Cambridge, £lO 10s (2), £l2 10s, £9 10s, £B, £lO, £ll 10s, £9, £4, £9; Mr. C.
