WAIKATO UNION.

Management Committee. A meeting of the management committee of the Waikato Rugby Union was held on Friday evening, Mr. T. B. Booth presiding. Other members present were : Messrs.

Whiting (Hamilton), Harris (Taupiri), Haselden (Waipa), Clarkin ] (Raglan), Mclntyre (Morrinsville), , Chapman (Putaruru), Yardley (Matamaca), Cooper (Referees’ Association), Thompson (secretary) and Speight (treasurer). A Putaruru Complaint. The Putaruru sub - union wrote drawing attention to the apparent lack of interest shown in that union by the Waikato selector. Putaruru claimed that it had several men who were possibles for representative honours, but these did not come under the selector’s eye as he would not see them. The letter was written not from a parochial spirit but in the interest of Waikato football.

The selector said that when pickI ing the trial teams early in the season he consulted a Putaruru official, J who said two men worth considering J were Ensor (forward) and Patterson (back). The former got a trial, and j the latter, at the weight given (nine stone), was too light. The speaker I may have neglected his duty in not going to see the Finlay Cup match between Matamata and Putaruru but he had seen Matamata and did not think it was any use seeing Putaruru. Pie received an urgent call that day to go to Cambridge. Mr. Chapman said that in his opinion Putaruru had not had a fair deal in the past. There had been plenty of lighter backs than Patterson who had gained representative honours. Plowever, Putaruru had had men who were not considered by the Waikato selector and who had gone far in football after leaving the district. Continuing, Mr. Chapman said he had seen Patterson play and he was convinced that he- was the second best back in the Finlay Cup match between Matamata and Putaruru.

Mr. Whiting suggested that advisory committees be appointed in various parts of the district to work with the selector.

Mr. Mclntyre said he thought a better scheme would be for the selector to notify the secretaries of the unions when he intended witnessing a match. The unions could then inform the selector as to which men were worth watching. Mr. Cooper said he had men watching various matches and received reports from time to time. The letter was laid on the table. Outside Matches.

The Morrinsville and Matamata unions were granted permission to play matches against Tauranga on dates submitted. Ranfurly Shield. The New Zealand union advised that Waikato’s challenge for the Ranfurly Shield had been approved and the match set down for decision on September 14. Waikato v. Hawke’s Bay. The Hawke’s Bay Union notified that the match v. Waikato would be played at Hastings on July 10, not at Napier as previously arranged. Waikato Tour. Details of the tour of the Waikato union team were completed. It was estimated that the tour would cost, at the outside, £452 17s, of which £2OO would be received from the unions visited. The sum of £SO of this, however, would have to be refunded when Hawke’s Bay came north later in the season. Additional receipts were expected in the form of a grant from the New Zealand Rugby Union. After a certain amount of discussion it was decided to send twentytwo players, manager and selector on the tour. A motion that the number of players be confined to twenty was defeated by six votes to five, four of the country delegates (Messrs. Chapman, Mclntyre, Harris and Yardley) and the treasurer voting for the motion. Mr. Yardley suggested that additional men could be sent direct from Waikato for the last two

matches if required. This would save a considerable amount. Mr. Chapman: We are sending as many as they sent All Blacks to Australia. Finlay Cur. It was decided that the next Finlay Cup date be July 27. when the holders will n'av Cambridge.
