Racing.
The Matamata-trained gelding, Unoco, which showed up prominently for most of the journey in the Fitzroy Handicap at the iast Ellerslie meeting, received a let-up when he returned home, but Trainer C. J. Carmont now has him in again in preparation for the Pakuranga Hunt meeting in August. Unoco appears to have benefited by the rest, and should give a good account of himself in any journey up to a mile. Gold Rain is now being boxed at Matamata and bears a much improved appearance. The St. Amans gelding has been troubled by a leg infirmity in the past, but C. Carmont is now confident that he will stand a preparation for flat racing.
One of the biggest of Valkvrian’s stock the writer has seen is running in Mr. J. Price’s paddock. He has been broken in, but the owner has not yet decided on his future. Now that the new Minister for Internal Affairs has inspected the Matamata course first hand, there is every prospect of the club being granted at least tbe loan of an extra totalisator license in the near future. An extra day would go a long way towards assisting the club to erect necessary buildings for the conduct of the annual meetings. The club has done extremely well in the matter of course improvements with any funds available, and it is deserving of all the assistance that can be given.
