FAREWELL SOCIAL.

MR. A. BENTON HONOURED. Notwithstanding the extremely inclement weather there was a large attendance at the Presbyterian Hall last Friday evening on the occasion 1 of a farewell social to Mr. Allan Benton, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Benton, who is leaving shortly to cake up missionary work on the Amazon river in South America. Rev. W. T. Brabyn presided and expressed his pleasure at the large attendance. The first part of the proceedings were of a sacred character,, commencing with the hymn “ Let There be Light,” and after scripture reading and prayer a splendid programme of musical items was rendered, interspersed with addresses by representative speakers, Adjutant Thomson, on behalf of the Salvation Army, Mr. s - Reid, on behalf of the Church, and Mr. D. Sealy all expressing good wishes for Mr. Benton’s future. The chairman referred to tlie call of the early church to missionary effort and to Paul's vision at Troas of Macedonia, expressed the thanks of the Presbyterian Church to Mr. Benton for his help in church and Sunday school, and on behalf of the Sunday school and congregation presented him with two beautifully-bound volumes of the Students Commentary and Short Biographies. Mr. Benton feelingly replied, thanking one and all for their kindly remarks. He felt he had a definite call to missionary work, and the gifts would ever remind him of his many friends in Putaruru. Mr. W. P. Benton also briefly spoke, thanking all for honouring his son, whom they would miss but who felt the call to wider service. During the evening musical and l elocutionary items were most acceptably given by Mrs. Brabyn, Mrs. Nicol. Mrs. Hollinshead, Mrs. Gibson, _ Mrs. Rigger, Messrs. Gawith, Brabyn, " G. Brown. K. Barnes.
